Pedestrian and driveway gates, built for salt air.

Timber and metal gates. The one hard rule on any Ramsgate install: hot-dip galvanised or stainless hardware. Zinc-plated hinges corrode inside eighteen months here. We've replaced enough of them to have stopped fitting them.

Pedestrian gates

  • Timber pedestrian gate to match closeboard or panel run - tanalised softwood or hardwood options
  • Metal pedestrian gate - wrought-iron look, hot-dip galvanised then powder-coated, or bare hot-dip galv
  • Gate posts concreted separately (never sharing a fence post)
  • Hot-dip galvanised or stainless A2 hinges - two per gate on timber, three on heavier metal
  • Latch and Yale-compatible lock options; slam latch or drop-bolt on inward-opening gates
  • Marine-grade sealant on any timber-to-metal fixing

Pricing: Timber pedestrian gate supplied and hung, £180 to £400. Metal pedestrian gate, £350 to £800. Ironmongery included.

Driveway gates

  • Single-leaf or double-leaf driveway gate, timber or metal
  • Manual (bolted or drop-bar) or automated (motorised swing or slide)
  • Gate posts sized for the leaf weight - typically 150mm x 150mm timber or 100mm x 100mm steel RHS concreted 900mm deep with C25
  • Wind-loading spec on any clifftop plot - we don't hang a full-height solid driveway gate on a West Cliff clifftop without talking about the wind first
  • Automation kit if specified - underground or above-ground motors, keypad, remote, safety-edge photocells

Pricing: Manual single driveway gate, £900 to £2,400. Manual double driveway gate, £1,600 to £4,500. Automation kit added, from £1,600 to £3,500 depending on spec.

Why the hardware matters here

Ramsgate is close enough to the sea that the salt is always in the air. On any gate within a mile of the coast (which is most of CT11 and the coastal edge of CT12), zinc-plated ironmongery from a builders' merchant catalogue is a false economy. It looks fine for a year, starts rusting at eighteen months, and by three years the hinge pins are seized and the latch is unusable.

Hot-dip galvanised gate hardware costs more up front - roughly double for hinges and latches - and it lasts fifteen to twenty years without maintenance. Stainless A2 costs more again and lasts effectively forever. We spec one or the other on every Ramsgate gate as standard, never the plated versions.
